Surveys

Bathymetric Surveys

Prior to the commissioning of any dredge operation, there needs to be a calculation of the dredge area, the volume of sediment to be removed and the discharge area.

For the majority of projects, this can be achieved with existing mapping and estimates of sediment depth by dipping. On large scale projects requiring a more accurate volume calculation, single or multi beam sonar together with differential GPS will be employed to generate 3 D models. These models can then be used directly in the navigation and dredge software suite aboard the dredger. The operator can therefore dredge within clearly defined parameters in real-time to ensure there is not an over or under dredge.

Lake and Lagoon have a number of recognised partners who have the necessary experience to carry out these surveys if required. In many instances less rigorous (and cheaper) methods of volume calculation will be employed.

Topographic Surveys

Topographic surveys can be commissioned by Lake and Lagoon, often in conjunction with the bathymetric survey. This could range from precise location of harbour walls, marina fingers to outfall structures. A topographic survey would also be required in the discharge area; this could range from establishing levels for the creation of run-off ditches for geotextile tubes to the setting out of settlement lagoons. Lake and Lagoon will always try to find the cost effective solution in management of the surveys and will use existing resources where possible e.g.  Google Earth and hand held GPS to determine local heights.

Sediment analysis and sampling Surveys

Most projects will require analysis of the sediment to determine the nutrient/contaminant composition together with a determination of particle size. This will be the driving force on both the methodology of dredging and identification of possible beneficial reuse or if contaminated its disposal. Invariably, specific guidelines as prescribed by the Environment Agency on both the laboratory analysis and the sampling techniques have to be adopted.

Environmental Surveys

Lake and Lagoon can commission an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) by one of our partners. This involves a scientific process of identifying the environmental consequences (both positive and negative) of a specific dredging and sediment disposal project. This is often is a statutory requirement requiring permits and is considered as part of the project parameters.

Our partners will provide a baseline of existing environmental conditions across a wide range of marine and ecological habitats. This will include advice on avoidance and mitigation of potentially adverse effects (of dredge and disposal) together with continuous monitoring of the project itself.
